History

The McElroy family founded Lizer in 1981 in response to large corporate lawn care companies.  Recognizing a lack of personal understanding in the lawn care industry, they wanted to form a local firm dedicated to personalized customer service.  Wanting a name that stood out from the competition, a name that could be carried over to new ownership, they pulled Lizer out of one of their foundation products – “ferti-lizer.”  To their credit, we continue to receive several calls a year asking for “Mr. Lizer.”

The McElroy’s ran the business from their home for several years until the space demands of their six children and a growing business moved the business to the next level.  Warehouse space was rented, along with an office at a nearby complex.  Over the next 10 years they added mowing, tree and shrub disease control, turf over-seeding and ornamental pruning services to their clients.

In 1993, the business was purchased by two employees, Brad Augustian and John Calewarts, with the idea of taking the company to the next level.  In 1997, Mike Stascak and Sam Durkee joined the ownership ranks.  Sam joined Brad managing the landscape end and Mike coupled with John in the lawn care division.

In 1999 Lizer opened our current facility on Bellevue St. We added a retail nursery and space for bulk storage of various mulches, topsoil and decorative stone.  In addition to award winning landscape design, installation and complete maintenance services, Lizer has also added irrigation installation/repair and decorative concrete curbing to their services list.

2006 brought the opportunity to purchase the assets of a local competitor, and in the process gain some valuable employees.  The additional staff not only helped to carry our workload but the addition of a Landscape Architect, Jeremy J. Kox, brought our design department to the elite level of our industry.

We look forward to what the next chapter in our business journey will bring and look forward to continuing to provide our community with the highest level of customer service.  Thank you for taking the time to view our website.  We sincerely hope you enjoy what it has to offer.

In closing, we would like to thank our past and current clients, our dedicated associates and the Tom and Sylvia McElroy family for their vision which made Lizer a reality.
